FARMINGTON HILLS -- American contemporary food fills the plates at the Grand Tavern. The new restaurant is located at Drake and Grand River in Farmington Hills.
However, just eight miles east on Grand River is the Brightmore neighborhood, one of the poorest areas in the nation.
The employees and owners of the Grand Tavern want to help their neighbors.
"We're doing a benefit for a Brightmore community. We're trying to raise money to feed the homeless for the holidays and we're also accepting canned goods and toys," says manager .
Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m., the Grand Tavern is hosting a $9.99 buffet with the proceeds going to the St. Christine's soup kitchen in Brightmore.
"We feed... almost 400 people on Tuesdays... We also give grocery bags that are 20-25 pounds of groceries that are provided to nearly 200 people," says Larry Robertson of St. Christine's Christian Services.
Guests are asked to bring canned goods and toys for kids. The food will reward the generosity.
While this is a difficult time to open a business, the people at the Grand Tavern want their neighborhood business to reach out. "We've been open for about a month and a half, and we figured it would be a good way for the neighborhoods to come out and get to know us and us to get to know all of them," says co-owner Mario Lucaj.
